Le plus petit gabarit de l'équipe. Autant dire que le demi de mêlée doit régulièrement être remplacé, pour peu que la troisième ligne d'en face se montre pour le moins hargneuse. Son rôle consiste à introduire le ballon dans la mêlée pendant que les deux packs sont occupés à s'euthanasier joyeusement. Puis, si le troisième ligne centre ne s'en saisit pas, il le récupère à sa sortie. Notons que dans ce deuxième cas, c'est là qu'il risque le plus de se ramasser un énorme troisième ligne sur le râble. Il doit également avoir un bon jeu au pied, si il veut survivre assez longtemps pour finir le match, car expédier...etc
